Microchipping provides a permanent, inexpensive form of identification that cannot be lost, altered, or intentionally removed. The process is quick and painless and can help ensure a happy reunion.

Microchips are no bigger than a grain of rice and are inserted in the scruff of the dog's neck. Each microchip has it's own identification number that is never duplicated. Once implanted it can be scanned to find the details of the dog's home and owner.

Petlog has a database of over 2 million animals living in the UK. The most common being dogs and cats… but there are also rabbits, horses, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, even an elephant!!

Once implanted with a microchip, your dog’s details will be added to the database. This allows you to be traced by an authorised body such as a dog warden who can scan your pet and read the microchip number. If your pet is lost while you are travelling in Europe, you can still be traced as Petlog is the UK member of the European Pet Network.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a small capsule that is around the size of a grain of rice. It carries it's own identification number and is made of inert material so it won’t be rejected by your dog’s body. It has no power source and has a special cap to prevent movement once it has been professionally implanted.

How is it implanted?

It can be implanted in the scruff of the neck by using a special pre-packed sterile needle. This is no more painful than a vaccination.

Is it compulsory to have a dog microchipped?

No. However, under the Pet Travel Scheme a dog or cat must be chipped if it leaves the UK and comes back again.

Where can I have my pet microchipped?

We will come to your home or you may come to ours

How long does a microchip last?

Microchipping is an inexpensive investment as it should last for the life of your pet.

Does my pet have to be a particular age before it can be chipped?

No it can be done before vaccination

Will implanting the chip hurt my pet?

Not at all, microchipping is a quick and painless procedure that should not hurt more than the pet’s vaccinations.

Why can’t I just have my pet tattooed or wear a tag?

The disadvantage with this method of identification is that tattoos can fade and numbers can also be added. All dogs in the UK must wear an identification tag, under the Control of Dogs Order 1992. This is a good form of identification but is not permanent.
